The hot spring prospered as the leading health resort in the Maeda domain, one of the largest fiefdoms, with an annual crop of rice worth one million Koku (180 million bushels) in the Tokugawa period. Yamashiro Hot Spring, one of the largest in the Hokuriku area, is also famous for having been loved by many well-known writers and artists such as Akiko Yosano, Kyoka Izumi, and Rosanjin Kitaohji.
